Seven Tips to Learn Piano Notes

Learn Piano notesThere is only one way to learn to play piano well.  Do you want to know the secret?  Here it is - Practice, practice, practice.  Well, actually that's only half the secret.  The rest is knowing what to practice and how to practice.  Here are seven major tips for students of all ages to get the best out of your piano practice.

1.  Start Slowly - practice a phrase at a speed that you can manage whilst keeping at a regular tempo, even if that tempo is extremely slow.  Then go back again and again with that phrase until you can make an improvement in accuracy and slightly increase the tempo towards the intended goal.  Don't, however, flog one phrase to death until you are sick of it.  The idea is to improve your 'muscle memory, so it becomes easier to play without thinking.  So only practice to the point where you feel an improvement.  Then move on to another phrase.

2.  Always keep the tempo.  Even if you play very slowly, keep the relative timing of the notes correct.

3.  Listen!  Listen to every note you play and think if it sounds right.  Don't over criticise yourself if it doesn't sound perfect, but just make a mental note of what you have to practice to improve.

4.  Keep your eyes on the music.  When you are reading from the page resist the temptation to look down at the keyboard.  Yes, it will be difficult at first but you will benefit much more in the long run if you can find the notes on the keyboard without looking down and music reading will become as easy as reading english.  So just practice.

5.  Concentrate!  This is a tricky one.  Minds tend to do the opposite of what you try to force them to do.  So try to avoid all distractions when practicing but when you are finding it difficult to concentrate take a short break.  Get up from the keyboard, stretch and take a little wander.  Then come back again when your mind is cleared.  It may only take a couple of minutes but it will greatly help in the long run.

6.  Master every step.  Don't put up with half an achievement.  Make a note of the tricky sections, break them down into manageable chunks and practice slowly, building up the speed.

7.  Relax when you play.  If you are starting to feel tense, don't push yourself.  Get up, stretch, move and relax.  Then come back and continue.

Follow these guidelines and playing piano will quickly become easier and much more enjoyable..
